What are Macros?

Macros, or Macronutrients, are types of food that are required in large amounts in the human diet. These are protein, carbohydrates, and fat.  They provide your body with what it needs to function and make up your daily calorie totals.

Protein + Carbohydrates + Fat = Total Calories

  • Protein – Used for growth and repair in the body and to build cells and tissues. It is found in meat, poultry, fish, dairy products, eggs, legumes and nuts.
  • Carboyhyrates – Provides the energy for your body and your brain. Carbs play an essential role  in muslce growth and overall body function. They are found in grains, fruits and vegetables.
  • Fat – Insultes and protects your bones and organs. It also helps with brain development and can act as backup fuel for energy.  Dietary fats are the denest energy source available to your body, as each gram of fat is over twice that of protein or carbs. Fats are found in meat, fish, dairy, olive oil, avocados, seeds and nuts.

1 gram of Protein = 4 calories

1 gram of Carbohydrates = 4 calories

1 gram of Fat = 9 calories
